St Patrick`s Day celebrations at St George`s

To celebrate St Patrick`s Day, St George`s Market will have a range of activities on Saturday 14 March.

This includes:
  • traditional music by `Toss the feathers` on Uilleann pipes and flute
  • Irish dancing by the Cathy O`Connor School of Dancing
  • a cookery demonstration of traditional Irish fayre by the Oxford Exchange restaurant.
Plus our traders will be offering goodies such as shamrock shaped confectionary and Irish stew.

Festival of Colours
Sun 15th Mar 2009 from 2pm - 6pm

Belfast`s historic St George`s Market will host Holi, the traditional Indian Festival of Colours, on 15 March.

This unique and vibrant festival celebrates the coming of spring. Witness St George`s Market come alive with literal explosions of colour and join in the festivities by throwing colourful powders (gulaal).

Taste special Indian delicacies, watch Bollywood dancers and try your Bhangra dancing with their professional Indian DJ!

Entrance is free.

Please note that the coloured powders used in the festival are permanent and will not wash out of clothes.

Family Open Day @ Ulster Hall
15th Mar 2009 @ 11am - 4pm
Come and see the newly reopened Ulster Hall.

As well as guided tours and workshops we`ll have juggling culchie mayhem from the Magiligan Family Circus and much more.

Most events will be free of charge, but places for tours and workshops will be limited, so please book in advance.


A special event during the day will be Baby Rave, at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Tickets for Baby Rave cost £4 with family ticket at £12.

Titanic`s Dock and Pump-House Tour

30-Jan-2009 - 31-Dec-2009 @ 2pm

Titanic`s Dock and Pump-House is seven acres in total, and includes the Thompson Dry Dock and its associated Pump-House.

The Pump-House was once the beating heart of Harland and Wolff`s operation during the construction of the great White Star Liners - Britannic, Olympic and most famously the RMS Titanic.

The Thompson Dock itself is the footprint of Titanic and provides an amazing representation of the scale of the ship.

Today the Pump-House is used as a visitor centre and café, with daily guided tours.

Bus tours of Queen`s Island

Venue: Titanic Quarter
Bus tours of Queen`s Island are available during the Titanic Made in Belfast Festival on 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29 March and 4 - 5, 11 - 19 April 2009.

The bus tour begins at Belfast City Hall and visits Titanic-related areas on the former site of Harland and Wolff.

The experienced guide will set the Titanic story in the context of Belfast`s fascinating maritime history.

The main offices where Titanic was planned and designed still exist, as does the slipway upon which it was constructed.

The life and times of the workforce at the turn of the 20th century will be recalled as the area is brought to life by your guide.

The final stop on the tour is the Thompson Dry Dock and Pump House which were built especially for the Olympic Class liners, of which Titanic was the second.

The tour lasts for approximately two hours and we suggest that you wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

Titanic Boat Tour

Venue: Lagan Lookout
Titanic boats tours are available during the Titanic Made in Belfast Festival on 14 - 15, 21 - 22, 28 - 29 March and 4 - 5, 11 - 19 April 2009.

The boat trip will take you from Donegall Quay to the actual place on Belfast Lough into which Titanic was launched in May 1911.

On route, the shipyard can be viewed from the water and you will be told about the history of Harland and Wolff.

The tour includes the Hamilton Dock, Alexandra Dock and Thompson Dock.

The point where Titanic entered the water at 12.13pm on 31 May 1911 can still be seen, as the ends of the slipway remain visible.

There will be opportunities to take photographs and ask questions.

Linen weaving by Flax Mill Textiles

Come along to St George`s Saturday Food and Garden Market. Experience a live linen weaving demonstration by Marion Baur, one of few remaining full-time linen weavers. She will be using a 3 ft weaving width handloom, which is over 100 years old, to weave scarves from pure Irish linen.

Earth Hour

The World Wildlife Fund`s (WWF) Earth Hour takes place between 8.30pm - 9.30pm on Saturday 28 March.

The Victoria Square dome, the Belfast Wheel, Queen’s University and Belfast City Hall will be plunged into darkness as part of the biggest ever mass global action on climate change.

WWF is aiming to inspire a billion people, in more than 1,000 cities, to sign up for Earth Hour. Cities that have signed up to the event include London, Cape Town, Dubai, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Mexico City, Moscow, Sydney and Toronto.
